Understanding Oaxaca’s Climate
To get the most out of this Oaxaca Packing List, you need to remember that Oaxaca has two distinct seasons: wet and dry, and both can be just as unpredictable. I’m talking random rain showers that last 1 hour and then sun again.
You’ll want to pack just right for both style and comfort, and without lugging around a giant suitcase. Thankfully you have this handy Oaxaca Packing List so you’re not left wondering what to pack for Oaxaca.
Here is a general overview of the weather so you can know when is the best time to visit.
Temperature Overview
Each season offers difference experiences:
- Spring (March to May): Expect pleasant warm days. Pack comfortable footwear for cobblestone streets, and consider casual attire with tank tops and light jackets.
- Summer (June to August): Summer is your best bet for enjoying the lush scenery, though it’s hurricane season, so it’s hot and humid. Prepare for the rainy season with essentials such as a tote bag for your umbrella and rain jacket.
- Fall (September to November): Early November marks the vibrant Day of the Dead celebrations. Fall is a better option for those who enjoy cool nights; the best way to stay warm is with layers, such as long sleeves and sweaters. This is my favorite season to travel.
- Winter (December to February): This is when the dry season has chillier mornings and evenings. Enjoy a hot drink at a cozy coffee shop, and don’t forget a medium-weight jacket.

Important Travel Essentials
Here’s what you definitely don’t want to leave behind, no matter where your adventures take you. I’ve included them on the Oaxaca Packing List so you don’t forget:
- Travel Documents: This might seem obvious, but it’s amazing how easy it is to forget the basics. Double-check that your passport, ID, and any necessary visas are packed safely. Don’t forget to take your international driver license if you’re planning on driving. Pro tip: Take a photo and keep digital copies just in case.
- Light Backpack or Tote: For day trips and souvenir shopping at the best artisan markets.
- Travel-Sized Toiletries: Make sure everything fits in your carry-on bag.
- Comfortable pajamas and/or loungewear: To sleep comfortably or even to wear in the plane
- First-Aid Kit: Accidents can happen, so pack a small first-aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and any other basics you might need. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
- Medications: If you have prescriptions, don’t forget them! Also, think about common over-the-counter meds you might need, like pain relievers, allergy meds, or pills for an upset stomach.
- Mexican Pesos: Either bring in cash or always carry your ATM card for easy access to withdrawing cash. Credit cards and debit cards are widely accepted, but cash is often preferred in rural areas, in the markets, taxi fare, and at smaller restaurants. You’ll also need it for tipping (if you’re inclined to do so)
- Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated while you explore tourist destinations. A reusable bottle is a perfect option for reducing waste.
- Insect Repellent: to keep away those pesky mosquitoes
Electronics and Gadgets
In this digital age, it’s hard to imagine traveling without a few trusty gadgets by your side. Here’s what should be on your Oaxaca packing list to keep you connected and capturing memories:
- Adapters: Look up what type of plug sockets are used in Mexico and make sure you have the right adapters. You don’t want your phone to run out of juice just as you’re about to snap the perfect sunset photo!
- Camera Gear: Oaxaca is a photographer’s dream with its vibrant sights and stunning landscapes. Whether you’re a professional or just love snapping pics on your phone, remember to pack your camera, spare batteries, and memory cards.
- Other Tech Essentials: Think about headphones for the plane, a power bank for charging on the go, and any chargers you might need. Having these items will keep your tech needs covered so you can focus on enjoying your trip.
- Work from Home / Abroad Essentials: When you run your own business, you’ll inevitably have to take some work calls from abroad. Make sure to bring your work cellphone and laptop so you can get some work while on the go at a cute coffee shop. Don’t forget your phone and laptop chargers!
Packing doesn’t have to be a stressful puzzle. With these Oaxaca packing list in place, your adventure will kick off smoothly, ensuring you’ve got everything you need to have a fantastic time no matter the season!
Other Things to Bring Based on Activities
Every place you visit has something that makes it unique, just like you! Therefore, it makes sense that there’s also different types of travelers who enjoy different kinds of activities.
Here is a general list of things to bring for different activities, as always consult with the local tourism boards for recommendations and alerts, weather apps, and friends and families who’ve had experience traveling to the places in Oaxaca you want to visit.
- Hiking: If you’re the adventurous and the nature type, bring sturdy shoes for the long treks in all types of terrains.
- Beaches: If you’re going to live in a bikini while in Oaxaca, bring plenty of sunscreen, a swimsuit or two (maybe even a wetsuit if you’re going to surf)
- Nightlife: If you like to be out late partying, bring an outfit that you can transition easily from daytime to nighttime: think sleek silk and comfortable cottons. I still suggest to ditch the heels and wear flats to be more comfortable or something with a chunky heel
- Wellness: If you’re into wellness, such as exercising, consider bringing a pair of workout bra and shorts/leggings to do at home workouts before or after you head out. Although trust me, walking is exercise enough! Bring running shoes if you’ll be running during your vacation.
Other Things to Consider
This Oaxaca packing list is meant to be a starting point for your packing. You can easily pack all these items into a carry-on backpack or suitcase.
If you’re traveling from place to place and using public transportation to move around, I definitely recommend you take a back-pack with only the essentials (from this list).
However, if you’re staying in one place for at least a week at a time, I recommend taking a carry-on suitcase. They’re much comfortable to carry around and spacious. But remember, just because it’s spacious, don’t overpack!
Consider if you’ll be staying at an Airbnb, hotel or hostel. It will help you determine how much you should pack. For example, if you’re staying at a hotel you can skip toiletries such as shampoos and body wash.
Oaxaca is a pretty relaxed city so most places don’t have a dress code. You have my permission to ditch the high heels! You’ll have a hard time walking the cobblestone streets and uneven sidewalks.
If you end up going somewhere fancy, wear something comfortable with closed toe shoes. I always pack a pair of foldable flats in case I need them.
Lastly, always pack a foldable bag. Often times, you’ll end up buying clothes and souvenirs from the many markets Oaxaca has to offer. This foldable bag comes in handy to put in all your extra items that your carry-on won’t fit anymore.
Conclusion
This Oaxaca Packing List helps you be ready for whatever the day throws at you—from exploring colorful city streets or hiking through gorgeous landscapes. Keep an eye on the weather, and tweak your wardrobe as needed.
